MORNING BRIEFING: In which north Spokane sees fire, Harry Potter turns 15 and a baby snow leopard shows his spots

No people were injured in a blaze that started last night in a carport behind two duplexes in the Logan neighborhood in north Spokane. It did, however, take out power to a city block and left a dog dead of smoke inhalation, the Spokane Fire Department said. (SR)

An Idaho man was killed when a 200-foot tree fell on his tent at the Stagger Inn Campground in Newport, Wash., Sunday night. Authorities say the tree became loose after a recent storm. (KREM)

Washington state student test scores, released yesterday, read about the same as last year, making small gains in some grades and subjects, and losing ground in others. State lawmakers this year voted to make a significant increase in education spending. (Seattle Times)

Even cuter than puppies, bunnies and kittens? Baby zoo animals, oh yes. One-upping the baby giraffe born at the Woodland Park Zoo just last month is this fuzzy snow leopard showing off his spots for the first time at the Bronx Zoo this week. (NYT)
