RE: Tips

Posted on Sat, Jan 7, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Once again, I jump into JEERS a week too late! I hate tipping, and it is
one of the reasons I and many others avoid restaurants as much as possible.
This alone should make your recent waitperson/writer quite happy, but I
would gladly offer an explanation for my position. The well known acronym
for TIPS is "to insure prompt service". Why would I, or anyone else for
that matter, continue to go to a restaurant with crappy service? It would
simply go out of business, as well it should, and you would be out of a
job. If the owner of your workplace simply paid you a decent wage based on
your ability and talent, I wouldn't be socially required to subsidize your
paycheck. Please tell me what makes restaurant workers any more deserving
of this ridiculous custom than the cashier at Wendy's, the grocery clerk at
Yokes, my medical receptionest, or any of the myriad other wonderful
service workers that I do business with every day?
