Medal of Honor: Hear his story

Posted on Tue, Nov 16, 2010 at 2:26 PM

President Barack Obama today awarded the Medal of Honor to Sgt. Sal Giunta of the 173rd Airborne for exceptional courage in the face of a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan three years ago. Giunta is the first living recipient of the nation's highest award for valor in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Six medals have been awarded posthumously.

Here is a searing interview with Giunta by Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, who were embedded with Giunta's company in 2007 — and present during the Rock Avalanche mission — leading to the war documentary, Restrepo. (Contains profanity, vivid description of combat.)
