Sheriff not endorsing Biviano, despite mailer

Though he appears on a flyer for her campaign, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says he is not endorsing Democratic House candidate Amy Biviano.

"I told Amy that I can't endorse her, and that I'm just staying neutral in that race,"says Knezovich, a Republican. Biviano is challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Matt Shea for the seat in the 4th Legislative District, which encompasses Spokane Valley.

The Inlander reported that Knezovich was endorsing Biviano's run. But both Biviano and Knezovich says that the sheriff only supports her position on domestic violence, not her candidacy itself.

A mailer distributed by Biviano shows her and Knezovich shaking hands in front of the courthouse, along with a quote saying he respects "Amy's determination to work with law enforcement, the court system and advocate groups to find solutions and assist victims of domestic violence."

"I knew that she was going to probably use [the picture] somewhere in her campaign," Knezovich says. He says he doesn't mind that his photo is used, and says Shea has also been supportive of law enforcement.

He adds that Shea's campaign has not contacted him to appear in any campaign materials.
