Prejudice/or Racism

Jeers to the open ended question the Inlander had in last weeks issue with
Have you seen prejudice and/or racism in the northwest? I think this
question is redundant and obvious. Living in the Northwest I have seen my
fair share of people being prejudice in passive, aggressive, and passive
aggressive manners. Whether it be the young woman down the street talking
about the annoying oriental couple she had to deal with, the grandmother
complaining about how the natives control her land, the teenagers who
misuse the word "Jewish," the skin heads who threaten and jump any
minority, the yahoo's who hail Hitler at pot lucks and parties, the people
who talk about the Mexican population like they are stealing our jobs in
the workforce, or worse yet the cops who kill a developmentally disabled
person because they don't see past their disability. Racism is still very
much alive here in the Northwest, and if you don't see it then you aren't
looking around at all. We all need to start opening our eyes to hate and
seeing it and combating it with compassion, instead of acting like it's the
pink elephant in our humdrum community.
