HIGHLIGHTS
This week, with our community straddling two states, staff reporters Daniel Walters and Wilson Criscione set out to examine Washington and Idaho’s responses to the pandemic and identify points where they’re out of sync. Part of the differences, of course, can be chalked up to politics. However, officials warn that inconsistencies within a region can cause critical issues.

“When you’ve got diametrically opposed philosophical practices and approaches, it makes public health work a lot more difficult,” cautions Dr. Bob Lutz, the health officer for both Spokane and Asotin counties.

• The issue also features a package of Drink Local stories looking at how local breweries, wineries and distilleries are coping in a world with COVID-19.

• Plus, we have a report on food banks struggling to meet needs, a column on how work is always changing and a little mood music for this moment of global anxiety.

LAST WORD
Don’t miss this powerful essay from Greg Spatz, writer, professor and fiddler: “The more we talked the more we felt like ghosts.
