Absurdity at Gonzaga

Posted on Tue, Nov 9, 2010 at 2:43 PM

The Bald Soprano — a play about two married couples trying to have a conversation, and the absurd results when their speech devolves into non sequiturs and nonsense —will be performed in semi-staged, readers theater fashion this week at Gonzaga University.

Director and Gonzaga theater professor Brian Russo describes Eugene Ionesco's play as "Monty Python before Monty Python." But it's not just all silly satire. Ionesco has a serious, even radical point to convey — according to Russo, that "language is not a form of communication, but a dangerous, illogical and violent form of human interaction. I think the aggression inherent in our communication makes communication more than impossible — it's dangerous."

The production takes place "in a lecture hall, where all sorts of lofty ideas are communicated," Russo says. "Here's a chance to use that same space for some very clever nonsense."
