MORNING BRIEF: machetes, hackers and more from Newtown

Police say a 17-year-old stole a bike and slashed its owner with a machete Sunday night in Hillyard (KXLY) 

Idaho authorities remind same-sex couples who come to Washington to get married that they won't get any new rights across the border. (CDA Press)

President Obama spoke at a memorial service for the 27 victims, including 20 children, killed in the Newtown, Conn. shooting, promising to "use whatever power this office holds" to prevent future tragedies, but not elaborating on political details. Video here. (NYT)

Westboro Baptist Church has been hacked. Probably by Anonymous, who promised to "render [the group] obsolete" after WBC members blamed the Newtown, Conn. shooting on legal gay marriage. (Gizmodo) 

Syria's vice president says neither side can win the conflict there, and a settlement is needed. (BBC)
