We Beg to Differ - Here in the Buzz Bin, we're perfectly capable of picking out which movie to go see. And if we're ever in doubt, we've found that we can usually trust the opinions of our two esteemed movie critics, Ed Symkus and Ray Pride. Still, every now and then a movie comes along that makes us wonder. Case in point? Scooby-Doo. Ed says it makes a "surprisingly good transition to the screen," and that it's "goofy fun for all." On top of all that, he gives it a thumbs up. Um, that wasn't the movie the Binsters went to. We went to a film which "effectively desecrates a familiar icon of our childhoods" and "made us want to kill ourselves." We give it a turkey. Coincidence? We Think Not - Last week, as part of our Davenport reopening cover package, we turned an editorial eye towards neglected downtown buildings that we considered prime targets for renovation and rebirth. The American Legion building on the northeast corner of Riverside and Washington not only led the list of strong candidates, but was the inspiration for the story in the first place. Well, last week's issue was on the stands exactly one day before Steve Schmautz, owner of SDS Realty, purchased the 101-year-old building for an undisclosed sum and revealed plans to renovate the historic structure.





Karaoke with the Nuns? - Well, not exactly -- but there are still plenty of reasons you should swing by the Singing Nuns on Mount Saint Michael's this Friday, July 19. That's when the nuns are hosting their first ever summer concert and benefit beginning at 5 pm. KXLY-TV's Mark Peterson is your host for the evening, which features a one-hour show and sing-along, as well as tours of the cloister and an all-American five-star barbecue dinner ($4). There's also a silent benefit auction where you can place a bid on a night of dreams at the Davenport, season family passes to EWU football and basketball games, dinner for two at Luigi's and many other great items. Monologue Post Party - As they are known to do for other traveling shows that have landed in Spokane, Dempsey's Brass Rail will host the cast and crew of The Vagina Monologues after the opening night. So head on over on Tuesday, July 23.
