Savory's chef search

A few new wrinkles in the saga of Savory, the soon-to-open restaurant at the old Blockbuster at 14th Avenue and Grand Boulevard.

We spoke with GM Scott Nelson today and he said Savory’s team was working to fill the void left by the departure of chef and former co-owner Steven Hermann.

They’ve been flying in chefs to compete in what he described as an “Iron-Chef-style” taste test. Nelson also wanted to make clear that while Daniel Gonzalez (pictured at a Ghetto Gourmand event this spring) is acting as interim chef — a temporary position at the head of the kitchen that is contingent on how well the outside chef search goes — he’ll have a home at Savory regardless.

Gonzalez was brought on initially as sous chef under Hermann, and if the Savory team finds the chef of its dreams, Gonzalez will return to that role.

They plan to fly in a few more chefs, but Nelson said, at this point, “We aren’t satisfied.”

Which brings us to Savory’s first day opening, which had been slated for mid-October, but is now obviously pushed back. Nelson was reluctant to commit to a date, though he did say, “We’ll open by the end of October, I’m sure of that.”
