Esteemed New York Times journalist and author (The Big Burn, The Last Hard Time) Timothy Egan checks into the Idaho 1st Congressional District race to ask how the hell a Democrat like first-term incumbent Walt Minnick is in the driver’s seat? His sense of mystification was not unlike The Inlander’s from a couple of weeks ago.
Egan was in Spokane Oct. 7 with an engaging account of his research into his latest historical work, The Big Burn as part of“Spokane is Reading”
Early in his column on the Idaho Congressional race, Egan quotes Minnick thusly on why he is unexpectedly successful:
“I reflect the Western view, and until recently the Republican view, that government should not tell you how to live your personal life.”
