Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire announced today that she is putting forward legislation to make Washington state the seventh in the nation to legalize gay marriage. And she did so comparing the "anything but marriage" law — which she signed just over two years ago — to Jim Crow laws for African Americans in the South.
"Some say domestic partnerships are the same as marriage," she said in a statement. "That's a version of the discriminatory 'separate but equal' argument."
Expect opposition from legislators like Rep. Matt Shea, R-Spokane Valley, who supported Referendum 71 intending to topple the everything-but-marriage legislation.
