Empyrean owner Chrisy Riddle in front of the old Madison Street location

On the heels of our Year in Review issue, in which I personally thanked Empyrean for duking it out through changing laws, a bad economy and a change of location, we got the bad news today from co-owner Chrisy Riddle: Empyrean will close its doors for good this month.

"We will be open for the few shows we have on the books," she says via email. "We are asking all of our friends to come join us [Jan. 13-15] and help us close an important chapter. It will be with great sorrow, but we just can't bear to do it without a goodbye party."

"It's really an emotionally charged goodbye. We haven't wanted to do it, but the economy, changes in state laws, changes in our location and so on has brought the Empyrean community to the end of an era."

Riddle and I exchanged emails today about the venue's ability to endure through so many changes. I complimented her — a full-time high school English teacher — for being able to juggle the responsibility with her day-to-day job. She responded:

"It's not the high-school teacher that kept the venue afloat, it's the spirit of art in Spokane that kept me afloat these last four years. We all did it as a family. That was the spirit of Empyrean. I hope that is the way it will be remembered."

Keep watching Bloglander for updates on the final shows at Empyrean, plus more information on the closure.

It´s pathetic how this so-called "city" cannot support it´s arts and entertainment scene. I´m starting to think that Spokane may be a lost cause culturally. Quite sad indeed. Jan 03, 2011 | Reply to this comment

Sad to hear this news...but I am sure I am to blame too. I used to go to the Empyrean quite a bit before they moved. Their new location is closer to me but for some reason it never captured the vibe I loved about the old location.
I´ve only attended the new location once for the David Bazan show. We can blame the city but in the end it´s our own fault for not giving the support such places need. Jan 03, 2011 | Reply to this comment

this is a sad day... so may people have invested so much of themselves into the community, the arts and the kids. If nothing else a locally owned independant venue has survived in a for over half a decade.

Thank you Spokane for the memories,

Thank you alex for starting something great! Jan 03, 2011

Despite my personal misgivings about the way things were done at The Empyrean, I am genuinely sad to see them close. Chrisy and Michelle are real troopers, even if I don´t agree with everything they´ve done or said. They gave lots of players (including me) an opportunity to play right in the middle of what little city culture exists. There will be even less now that they are gone. I wish them both the best as they venture into new endeavors. Jan 03, 2011 | Reply to this comment
