THIS WEEK: Bluegrass at The Bartlett, boxing, author Kate DiCamillo & more
The Young Dubliners headline the Knitting Factory Friday night.

We stick a fork in February this week, and I say good riddance! Bring on spring! But a little cold is no reason to skip out on some of the worthy entertainment options happening around town this week. Here are some highlights of the week ahead:

Monday, Feb. 26

FILM | Monday movies are back at the Magic Lantern, and this week the screening sounds like a killer. Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People explores how African-American photographers have depicted their own communities and culture since the advent of the camera. Here's a look at the film:

WORDS | Award-winning poet and novelist Kevin Powers stops by Gonzaga for a free discussion on how writing can be a way to sort complex human experiences like war. Powers, an Iraq Veteran, was a National Book Award finalist for his novel The Yellow Birds and has also published a volume of poetry, Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting.

Tuesday, Feb. 27

MUSIC | Northwest of Nashville has some new things happening at the start of its third season tonight. Read about it here.

Wednesday, Feb. 28

WORDS | The Power 2 The Poetry group we recently profiled are hosting a poetry slam at Auntie's tonight.

MUSIC | The Travelin' McCourys bluegrass crew is full of some of the best musicians you'll ever get the chance to see. I've seen them all when they've played in Del McCoury Band; this is everyone but Del, plus guitarist Cody Kilby. They're playing two shows at The Bartlett tonight; read our interview with mandolin master Ronnie McCoury right here.

Thursday, March 1

SPORTS | If you love the so-called "sweet science," get thee to the Coeur d'Alene Casino for the House of Fury Boxing night, paying tribute to Moe Smith, who was integral to bringing boxing to the casino and the region more than 20 years ago.

MUSIC | Alt rockers Bully swing by The Bartlett for a show with Melkbelly. Bully’s music is reminiscent of the band’s Sub Pop labelmates Sleater-Kinney and L7. And like those bands, Bully’s songs often feel like deeply personal diary entries set to snarling, accessible rock hooks. Here's a little taste of the headliner:

Friday, March 2

VISUAL ARTS | It's First Friday, people! Go look at cool art in Spokane!

MUSIC | It's never too early to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in my world, and the Young Dubliners are here for us all, playing the Knit tonight with Buffalo Jones.

Saturday, March 3

WORDS | Author Kate DiCamillo has won two Newbury Awards, and she swings by the Spokane Public Library tonight to celebrate her new book, La La La: A Story of Hope.

MUSIC | Atmosphere puts on one hell of a show, every time, and you can bet they'll do it tonight for a packed-out Knitting Factory.
