Thin Air Takes Off -- Just a reminder to let you know that Spokane's first and only non-commercial community radio station begins broadcasting this Sunday. After years of blood, sweat and probably a few tears spent on the part of the station's steering committee and squad of dedicated volunteers getting this thing off the ground, KYRS at 95.3 FM will finally begin beaming its 100-watt signal, bringing intelligent news and real music alternatives, into Spokane on Oct. 26. Station Coordinator Lupito Flores is calling Sunday's switch throwing a "soft opening" and admits there may be a few opening night jitters to calm. Still, this is sure to be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Tune in to get a taste of what you've been missing. No Angel Wings Here -- Cameron Lewis, the general manager over at CenterStage, is upset. "Someone took my bell, and I want it back," he says. "It happened last Friday. It was in the men's bathroom -- so yeah, I would assume it isn't a woman who made off with it. Rather some naughty little boy."


The bell in question is an old-style doorbell, consisting of a round, dome-shaped, silver-colored bell housing and its connecting nut.


"It was hard-mounted into the door," says Lewis. "They just unscrewed it and took it with them. It must have been, like, nerds."


Folks, stealing stuff from local venues is about the creepiest thing you can do. But Lewis is offering a reward for the bell's safe return anyway. Don't call Secret Witness; just call CenterStage at 747-8243.





Down from the Yaak -- It's always a rare literary treat to see Rick Bass when he comes through town, and this Friday, we'll get our chance. Bass, the author of Winter, The Lost Grizzlies and The Watch, will be at the Riverpoint Auditorium, 668 N. Riverpoint Blvd, on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 pm.





Thumbs Up? -- Ever wish you could veto a film long before it has a chance to unleash itself upon unsuspecting filmgoers? North by Northwest would like to invite you to a test screening -- and focus group afterwards -- of a new Wesley Snipes espionage flick on Monday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 pm at Gonzaga's Jundt Museum, Room 110.





Coffee and Cream -- Half the fun of getting your morning latte is seeing what design your barista has made in the foam on top. Here in the Bin, we've seen everything from daisies, stars, hearts and, once, even a witch. This Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm, the Doma Roasting Company is pairing up with the MAC and hosting an art-in-the-making demonstration/exhibit of seven local "latte artists" doing their thing at the MAC.
